About United Nation Police

The mission of UN Police is to enhance international peace and security by supporting Member-States in conflict, post-conflict and other crisis situations.

Depending on the mandate given by the United Nations Security Council, United Nations police build and support, or, where mandated, act as a substitute or partial substitute for, host-State police capacity to prevent and detect crime, protect life and property and maintain public order and safety in adherence to the rule of law and international human rights law.

United Nations police pursue community-oriented and intelligence-led policing approaches to contribute to the protection of civilians and human rights; address, among other things, sexual and gender-based violence, conflict-related sexual violence and serious and organized crime; and conduct investigations, special operations and electoral security.

The United Nations Police occupy a unique role among the world’s police, with about 11,000 men and women from over 90 countries serving on the frontlines in 14 peace operations (figures as of August 2020). They are deployed as formed police units , individual police officers, which include specialized teams, contracted seconded police and civilian experts, which are deployed in United Nations peace operations.

United Nations police officers are supported by the Police Division of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, with its New York-based sections and the Brindisi-based Standing Police Capacity. At Headquarters, the Police Adviser is responsible for providing strategic advice and support on all policing issues to senior United Nations officials, as well as to heads of police components of operations led by the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Political Affairs.

General Requirements on United Nation Police Vacancies -UNPOL

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from a certified police academy or other similar law enforcement training institution OR Graduate from a know and accredited University or Polytechnic.
is required.

A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience in establishment of
initiatives related to community policing, police management, police administration or peacekeeping is
desired.

Experience: At least twelve (12) years of progressive and active policing service/experience, including four
(4) years of senior police management experience commanding diverse teams in a multi-disciplined
workplace, including the development of budgets and organizational policy. Peacekeeping or other
international experience is highly desirable.

Languages: fluency in oral and written English is required.

Assessment for Mission Service: All candidates should be cleared through an Assessment for Mission
Service (AMS) either by a Selection Assistance and Assessment Team (SAAT) deployed to a Member State
or on the basis of an in-mission AMS upon arrival of the candidates. Failure to pass the in-mission
assessment will result in candidate’s repatriation. All repatriation related expenses in this case are to be
borne by the Member State. Therefore, the Member States are strongly encouraged to request a SAAT to
conduct an AMS in the Member State prior to the police personnel deployment.

Additionally desired:

• In-depth understanding of UN mandates and the implementation processes;
• Previous experience in UN Police post-conflict operations;
• Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to democratic policing;
• Attendance of formally recognized or accredited SSR-related programmes;
• Good knowledge of the conditions prevailing in Cyprus with the ability to appraise and evaluate the
implications of economic, political, cultural and historical sensitivities in the region.

What happens before UNPOL Recruitment?

The United Nations Security Council mandates United Nations peace operations, including the policing tasks. The police concept of operations is developed from the mandate and includes proposed expertise and required staffing.
