The Ministry of Education is seeking Expressions of Interest in Subject Expert Groups that will be established to develop NCEA Level 2 achievement standards and accompanying materials for new subjects in The New Zealand Curriculum, as part of the Review of Achievement Standards.

Help strengthen NCEA and apply to be part of Subject Expert Groups (SEGs) that will be established to develop NCEA Level 2 achievement standards and accompanying materials for new subjects in The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC), as part of the Review of Achievement Standards.

Please note that we are not accepting further Expressions of Interest for previously established SEGs at this time. Also note that New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and Pacific Studies will follow a separate development timeline.
What the SEGs will do
Subject Expert Groups (SEGs) will work in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority to identify the significant learning in their subject and develop NZC NCEA Level 2 achievement standards and associated materials for each of the following subjects, based on the NCEA Change Package.

|Tourism||To develop a subject derived from the Social Sciences Learning Area to strengthen pathways into both vocational as well as tertiary education, as well as to prepare students for the tourism workforce.||29 Nov – 1 Dec|
|Computer Science||To develop a subject aligned with ‘computational thinking for digital technologies’ in the Technology Learning Area. Note that this SEG could include some members of the Level 1 Digital Technologies SEG which may mean spaces on the DT SEG also need to be filled.||22-24 Nov|
|Environment and Societies||To develop a subject derived from the Social Sciences Learning Area with a strong focus on sustainability and the environment, while also including political and social factors.||22-24 Nov|
|Processing and Systems Technology (P&S Tech)||To develop a subject derived from the Technology Learning Area with a strong focus on developing knowledge, skills and understanding about how to formulate and prototype processed products and develop and use systems within different contexts.||29 Nov – 1 Dec|
|Making Music||Music SEGs for NCEA Levels 2 and 3 will include members of the Level 1 Music SEG along with new members. The exact nature of the split is yet to be determined and both SEGs will require a range of perspectives and specialist disciplinary knowledge.||22 – 24 Nov|

Each SEG is expected to have 6-8 members and will shape what NCEA will look like in the future, giving us the opportunity to ensure mana ōrite mō te mātauranga Māori (equal status for Māori knowledge in NCEA).
Following the development of NZC NCEA Level 2 subjects, SEG members may be asked to commit a further 6-10 days in 2022/2023 to develop the NZC NCEA Level 3 subjects.
Who we are looking for:
- experienced kaiako and experts from a range of educational settings and backgrounds with special emphasis on secondary, community, industry and tertiary education
- experienced kaiako and experts from a range of educational settings and backgrounds with proven ability to successfully design/integrate Māori values, principles, structures and practices into teaching, learning and assessment
- experienced kaiako who can represent the rich diversity of our learners and help ensure that products are equitable and accessible for all ākonga

Applicants should have:
- availability to commit around 12 days in 2021/2022, including for online meetings, offline work and two sets of face-to-face meetings in Wellington beginning in 2021. Initial SEG meeting dates for Phase 1 development are listed above.
- a commitment to the Ministry’s vision of realising the changes of the NCEA Change Programme.
- expertise in learning and assessment within that subject, and
- experience or interest in developing new ways to integrate te ao Māori and mātauranga Māori in building teacher capability, improving teaching, learning and assessment resources, and supporting diverse ākonga.

Applicants may express interest in more than one subject. However, in most cases, applicants will not be appointed to more than one SEG.
