NAPLAN Test

The National Assessment Program (NAP). NAP provides the measure through which governments, education authorities and schools can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes.

What Is NAPLAN Test?

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken every year in May. NAPLAN is run at the direction of the Education Council.

General Information On The NAPLAN

NAPLAN is used by governments, education authorities and schools to determine whether young Australians are meeting important goals in literacy and numeracy.

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to sit the NAPLAN tests, which are held in May each year. NAPLAN gives a snapshot of how children are performing in reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and numeracy.

It complements other effective classroom assessment and reporting practices.

ACARA

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) develops the tests and marking standards and the bodies that work in ACARA either in Queensland or new south wales are highlighted below

QCAA

The QCAA works with Queensland schools and schooling sectors to ensure the smooth delivery and collection of the tests, focusing on the importance of compliance with the administration protocols.

NESA

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) is the test administration authority responsible for the administration and delivery of NAPLAN tests in New South Wales.

 VCAA

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) is a statutory authority continued under the Education and Training Reform that is responsible for curriculum, assessment and reporting in year levels Foundation to 12 for all Victorian school students.

The VCAA is also the Test Administration Authority responsible for the administration and delivery of NAPLAN in Victoria.

Areas That Students are Tested On

  1. Reading comprehension
  2. Writing – students will write a persuasive text
  3. Language Conventions – spelling, grammar, punctuation
  4.  Numeracy

The NAPLAN Result Outcome

Results are sent to schools in a software program called ‘Smart’. The data given includes:

  • Individual results,
  • School trends over several years
  • How the school performed compared to other schools in the state and
  • How much the children have ‘grown’ between NAPLANs in Years 3 and 5.

The Benefits of NAPLAN Online

  1.  NAPLAN Online will provide better assessment, more precise results, and a faster turnaround of information.
  2. Most students find online assessments more engaging.
  3. NAPLAN Online uses tailored testing, which gives students questions better suited to their ability, resulting in more detailed individual assessments.
  4. Online assessment will reduce the time it takes to mark and provide feedback to schools and teachers.
  5. The precision and improved timing of the results will help teachers streamline their teaching more specifically to student needs.
  6. By 2022, online assessments will significantly reduce the time it takes for student results to be returned to parents and carers

Requirement For The NAPLAN Test

  • Schools will be responsible for ensuring that all students have the appropriate headphones or earphones to complete NAPLAN Online.
  • The Authority will ensure online staff training materials are available from the start of Term 1.
  • NAPLAN Online is conducted on the platform and students access the tests via a Locked Down Browser (LDB), which needs to be installed on all of the devices being used by students for testing.
  • If anyone has disabilities there’s a liability adjustment made so  that you can access and participate in education on the same basis as other students

Preparation For The NAPLAN Test

  1. Parents are to encourage their children to simply do the best they can on the day.
  2. Avoid excessive cramming or coaching in the lead-up to NAPLAN
  3. Speak to your child’s teacher if you have questions about how you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN.
  4. If you want to help your child feel comfortable with the kinds of questions in a NAPLAN test, you can view past NAPLAN papers and answers for practice or visit the NAPLAN Online public demonstration site.
  5. Students are taught features of persuasive writing.
  6. ‘Test Readiness’ should be talked about – strategies to scan passages for comprehension, how to attempt multiple choice questions, what to do if you don’t know an answer.
